PATHWAYS

ACCELERATION
The Board of Studies now makes provisions for students to study for their Higher School Certificate in a variety of ways. Those students who have the ability to undertake their studies in a shorter period of time may undertake an 'Accelerated' pattern of studies. Further details may be obtained from the Deputy Principal-Curriculum, Mr Myers, by contacting the school on 9521 2099.

Students may undertake preliminary and/or HSC courses in advance of their usual cohort (ie. in less than the Board's stated indicative times) in accordance with the principles contained in the Board's Guidelines for Accelerated Progression (revised 1993). Decisions about acceleration of HSC students will be made by the Principal within Board guidelines.

Students may accelerate in all courses (grade advancement) or in one or more courses. Acceleration must be based on the principle of compression of work, not omission of work. Students who accelerate in one or more courses must achieve the required outcomes of the courses in a shorter timeframe, ie. one or more years in advance of their cohort.

Accelerating students may count towards their Higher School Certificate, results obtained in advance of their cohort.

For students accelerating by up to two years, schools should simply enter students for their accelerated course(s) on the appropriate entry form, viz the School Certificate, Preliminary or Higher School Certificate entry form.

ACCUMULATION
The Board of Studies now makes provisions for students to study for their Higher School Certificate in a variety of ways. Those students who need to spread their studies over a longer period of time may undertake an 'Accumulation' pattern of studies. Further details may be obtained from the Deputy Principal-Curriculum, My Myers, by contacting the school on 9521 2099.

Students may accumulate courses towards the Higher School Certificate over up to five years.

The five-year period will commence in the first year the student attempts a HSC course examination. Accumulation of HSC courses cannot extend over more than a five-year period. The five-year period is a 'rolling period' so that students wishing to go beyond the five years will have the earliest year's presentation deleted.

Students should submit a Higher School Certificate entry form by the due date in any year in which they attempt a HSC course. Preliminary courses may, but need not be, accumulated within this period.

Students who are accumulating courses will receive a Record of Achievement or, in the case of self-tuition candidates, a Result Notice for each calendar year of study. These cumulative transcripts will record all Preliminary or HSC courses satisfactorily completed, including repeat attempts.

On completion of the accumulation, all HSC pattern of study requirements must have been met for both the Preliminary and HSC courses. They need not be met for each calendar year of accumulation.

SCHOOL POLICY
The following general guidelines will apply to 'Accumulation':
  • Students may accumulate for any worthwhile purpose, for example; part-time work, talented sports program etc.
  • Students are encouraged to complete their Preliminary Stage courses in the same year (Year 11) and then spread their HSC Stage courses over two or more years.
  • Students must return to school immediately following HSC exams to commence final year studies in the remaining course.
