CAREERS/VET

Career information is paramount in years 11 and 12 when most students are finalising post school education, training or job choices.

Students at this stage receive notices to assist in their decision making via year assemblies (Year 12 - Monday mornings and Year 11 - Wednesday mornings).

Major events during the year include University Discovery days, Tertiary Careers Markets and Tafe information days.

The Career Adviser's room is located in E block and is open throughout the week. Students are able to consult with the Careers Adviser or research careers using the available reference material. There is also a notice board outside the Career Adviser's room with a variety of information useful to students including any job vacancies that we are notified about from time to time.

Years 9 and 10 can begin to explore their career preferences by undertaking work experience once they reach 14 years of age. This must be organised with the involvement of the Careers Adviser to ensure compliance with all legal and safety requirements.

Parents and students can contact the Careers Adviser, Mr J Olovich directly by phone on 02 9542 2313.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION GUIDELINES
Board Developed Vocational HSC Courses at Kirrawee High School in 2009 include:
  • Hospitality (Kitchen Operations) SIT 20307, 240 hrs
  • Building and Construction 240 hrs
  • Metals and Engineering 240 hrs

Vocational Education Courses:

  • Count towards a HSC program of study; lead to nationally recognised AQF qualifications; are recognised by Industry and are recognised by other RTOs.
  • 240 hrs courses are eligible for inclusion in the UAI as a category B Subject.
  • At the completion of the HSC course, students will receive a Certificate of Attainment, listing the units of competency achieved, issued by the Board of Studies.
  • The HSC examination in VET courses is optional. It consists of a written examination. Students will nominate during the HSC year to undertake the HSC examination.
  • The examination is independent of the competency based assessment undertaken during VET courses. It has no impact on student eligibility for AQF qualifications.

VET HSC Courses within the framework have:

  • Mandatory work placement.
  • Involve competency based assessment of skills and knowledge.
  • Include a HSC examination for students who pursue a UAI pathway.

Students at Kirrawee High can also apply to undertake TVET courses through local Tafe colleges. Enquiries should be directed to the VET Coordinator, Mrs K Mckenzie-Hicks or the Careers Adviser.
