INTEGRATION
PROGRAMS AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED LEARNING SUPPORT
The school continues to provide support to all students with disabilities. The learning support teacher and integration aide have assisted students with disabilities as often as is practical to ensure that they have full access to school facilities and curriculum. Other support staff, including school counsellors and Head Teacher Welfare, assist with support.
As an ongoing policy, classroom teachers are regularly in serviced on the needs of students with special learning requirements.
A full range of School Certificate and Higher School Certificate special examination provisions are provided for students with disabilities. Assessment procedures are modified to provide flexibility for those with severe learning disabilities.
The school also continues to provide facilities for students with physical disabilities.
IN CLASS SUPPORT
The main form of learning support at Kirrawee High is in-class support. The learning support teacher works in the classroom with the class to assist students where required. Students are helped on a needs basis and individual students are not obviously targeted. As many classes as possible receive in-class support each year. Withdrawal is not used as a general rule except for special programs which usually run in small groups.
OUT OF CLASS SUPPORT
Out of class help is always available to an individual student on request. Individual tuition is also available though the Learning Centre.
HOME TUTOR PROGRAM
This program has been designed for students who prefer to work with someone at home. There is a home reading, spelling and comprehension program available for any students who wish to improve their skills in these areas.
SPECIAL EXAMINATION PROVISIONS

The school counsellor and support teacher test the students and then a formal application is submitted to the Board of Studies. Applicants need to have had intervention through their junior schooling and documentation from outside professionals is also usually required. Volunteer parents act as reader/scribes to assist students.

This reading recovery program is conducted during roll call for two terms and has replaced our Peer Tutor Program. It occurs in all Year 7 classes and is administered by Year 10 volunteers. It is designed to enhance the literacy skills of all Year 7 students and includes spelling, language skills and comprehension. |
